From Unopened Results to General Manager: Chris Gillham on TAFE, Reinvention & Backing Your Kids
What if your child’s school results say far less about their future than how they respond to them? This episode is for any parent, or any young person, who’s worried that a lacklustre final year has closed doors, and it’s a reminder that a pragmatic next step can matter more than any score. In this episode of More Than a Score, we sit down with Chris Gillham: general manager in logistics and supply chain, former real estate agent, motorcycle restorer, and hands-on dad of two. Chris didn’t do much study in Year 12. He knew his score would be disappointing, so he left the envelope unopened for weeks. When he finally looked, there was no drama, just a practical question: what now? He’d wanted engineering, so he worked backwards, enrolled in TAFE, finished a 12-month building course in three months, and earned a university offer. Then he found he hated uni and left, much as his own dad had done. What followed was a decade in the family real estate business, a moment of clarity when he walked away from a major sale to protect a friendship, six months motorcycling around Vietnam, and a move into logistics where he worked his way from sales rep to general manager. Along the way, he learnt the cost of chasing titles and money, and the value of knowing what you’re worth. For parents, it’s an honest, funny and practical conversation about trust, resilience, and when to step in or step back. For young people, it’s proof that a score is a moment, and that the next sensible step is always available. What you’ll discover in this episode - Why a disappointing score can be met with pragmatism rather than panic - How TAFE, with practical learning and industry-based teachers, unlocked Chris’s motivation - Why warm but firm teachers often bring out the best in young people - How to create a “safety net” so your teenager will always call you when things go wrong - The reverse engineering approach Chris uses for big decisions, starting from the best outcome for everyone - Why ego is so costly, and how gathering your thoughts then asking for diverse views leads to better choices - Why execution beats perfection at work - The walk-away moment that changed how Chris defined success - The difference between being “pully” and “pushy” as a parent, and why kids can cope with some stress - How AI and fewer graduate roles are changing the path into work, and the human capabilities that matter More Than a Score is hosted by Laura Pitt and Dan Steele, a former secondary teacher and a former award-winning assistant principal, on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, with over 35 years in education between them.
