{"id":212643600,"date":"2026-09-18T09:07:47","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T23:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/muchmorethanascore.com\/?p=212643600"},"modified":"2026-09-19T16:56:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T06:56:36","slug":"question-about-school-without-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/muchmorethanascore.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/18\/question-about-school-without-pressure\/","title":{"rendered":"When every question becomes a checkpoint"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-moment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Moment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Term 3 is grinding on, the pressure is rising, and you have noticed the exchanges getting shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You ask how school was, that practice exam went or whether the assignment is done, and you get a word back.. if that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, you ask again, a little more pointedly, and the shoulders go up, and what was meant to be a chat has become a standoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere in this stretch of the year, your questions started sounding and feeling more like checkpoints or evaluations\u2026 and you both feel it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-instinct\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Instinct<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we are worried, we gather information, and questions are how we do it. Did you finish? Have you started? How did the test go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each one feels reasonable on its own. But strung together across a tense fortnight, they stop feeling like interest and start feeling like an audit. A young person under pressure hears the running total: are you keeping up, are you enough, prove it to me. No wonder the drawbridge goes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#97f0b657\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 id=\"h-the-shift\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Shift<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-instead-of-a-question-that-checks-up-have-you-done-it\">Instead of a question that can feel more like checking up: \u201cHave you done it?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try out a question that can open things up: \u201c<em>What is on your plate this week?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-it-helps\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why it helps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shift is small but it changes the whole exchange. A checking question can be closed with a yes, a no, or a grunt, and all three end the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An opening question has nowhere to hide, so it tends to get a real answer. They also signal something different: I am interested in you, not just what is produced. It also does quiet work underneath. Even better, it also hands your child the floor, taps into their world, and treats them as the expert on their own week, which is exactly the footing a good conversation like this needs to stand on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shift?
